Discover Tampico, Mexico with locals and meet raccoons & aliens.

I consider myself extremely lucky because every time I travel to Mexico, I am accompanied by locals, which helps me to gain deeper understanding of this beautiful and complex culture. In November 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting the eastern part of Mexico for the first time. During my trip, I spent a couple of days in the charming city of Tampico. Every Mexican region is unique, with its own charm, traditions, and culture and Tampico is no exception.

BASIC FACTS

Tampico is a bustling port city located in the southeastern part of Tamaulipas, Mexico, with a population of around 315,000 people. This city is renowned for its vast oil and gas reserves, making it one of the most important oil fields in Mexico. In addition to its industrial riches, Tampico boasts stunning natural beauty, including the picturesque Playa Miramar beach, as well as exotic flora and fauna that draw visitors from all over the world. However, Tampico is not just a city of earthly riches and beauty. Some people claim to have seen extraterrestrial sightings in the area, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to the region. Whether you’re interested in exploring the city’s natural wonders or seeking to uncover its enigmatic side, Tampico offers something for everyone. So why not plan a visit to this fascinating Mexican city and discover its many treasures for yourself?

Tampico is a city steeped in history, located on the northern bank of the Panuco River and surrounded by lagoons. The city’s origins date back to 1532, when a Franciscan monastery was founded on the ruins of an Aztec village. However, Tampico’s early years were marked by turmoil and destruction, as it was destroyed by pirates in 1683 and subsequently resettled in 1823. In 1829, General Santa Anna led a victorious battle against Spanish forces in Tampico, cementing the city’s importance in Mexican history.

Tampico’s strategic location and natural resources also made it a target for foreign occupation. During the Mexican-American War, the city was occupied by U.S forces, and in 1862, it was taken by the French. The city’s troubled past continued into the 20th century, with the bombardment of Veracruz in 1914 as a result of the arrest of U.S sailors in Tampico.

Despite these challenges, Tampico has emerged as a thriving city with a booming petroleum sector. The growth of the industry has significantly increased the city’s population and transformed it into one of the best oil ports in the world, with the most modern harbor in the entire country. Today, Tampico is a dynamic city that blends its rich history with a modern, thriving economy. Whether you’re interested in exploring its past or discovering its present-day industrial might, Tampico offers a fascinating glimpse into Mexico’s past and present.

Blue crab or “jaiba azul” is a signature ingredient in Tampico’s cuisine.

The best things to do in Tampico, Mexico:

  1. Playa Miramar, Miramar Beach (Madero City), The Ultimate Destination for Water Sports Enthusiasts

Located in a near-by city of Madero, the Miramar beach is the most important attraction of the entire state, and it is believed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole Gulf of Mexico. You cannot miss this place! Without any doubt this is my personal number one. Boasting a vast expanse of golden sand and gentle waves, this beach is not only incredibly beautiful, but also impressively huge, making it the perfect spot for water sports such as diving, windsurfing, and more.

After a day of fun in the sun, head to one of the many shops and cafes located near the beach. Here, you can relax and enjoy some delicious local cuisine or browse through a variety of souvenirs and gifts. Be sure to check out the sea shell souvenirs, which are a popular item among tourists and make the perfect memento of your trip to Playa Miramar.

For some tourists, the allure of Miramar Beach extends far beyond its stunning natural beauty and water sports opportunities. According to local legend, the beach and its surrounding areas are believed to be visited by extraterrestrials, making it a popular destination for UFO enthusiasts.

One of the most famous extraterrestrial legends surrounding Miramar Beach is the story of Amupac, an alien base that is said to protect the nearby cities of Madero and Tampico from hurricanes. According to the legend, the base has been in operation for over 50 years and has successfully shielded the area from the devastating effects of these natural disasters.

For those who are interested in the extraterrestrial legends of Miramar Beach, there are plenty of opportunities to explore this fascinating topic. Visitors can take a picture with an extraterrestrial statue located directly on the beach, or purchase a variety of souvenirs including magnets and t-shirts featuring aliens.

Even the local restaurants and shops have embraced the extraterrestrial theme, with many establishments named after popular UFO sightings and phenomena. Whether you’re looking to grab a bite to eat or browse through some unique souvenirs, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest.

Miramar Beach in Tampico is also a home for friendly racoons.

During my trip I have not met any extraterrestrial, so unfortunately, I am not able to confirm the alien’s theory. On the other hand, I managed to meet the whole raccoon family and I assure you that they are real and sweet!

  2. Carpenter’s Lagoon, Mexico. Home for crocodiles.

Looking for a great walking area in Tampico? Look no further than Carpenter’s Lagoon! Located in the heart of the city, this popular spot is perfect for strolling, biking, or just enjoying some delicious Mexican snacks. But the real highlight of Carpenter’s Lagoon is the impressive crocodiles that call the lagoon home. These huge reptiles are a must-see for any visitor to the area.
So if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Tampico, be sure to add Carpenter’s Lagoon to your list of must-visit destinations!

When visiting the lagoon, it is important to take note of the security signs and avoid swimming in the water. Despite the impressive sight of the crocodiles, they are not friendly creatures and can pose a serious danger to visitors who attempt to enter the water. So for your safety and the safety of these incredible creatures, it’s best to admire them from a safe distance and avoid any potential conflicts.

  3. Plaza del Armas, Tampico.

Another must-visit attraction in Tampico is the Plaza de Armas. This beautiful public square is the heart of the city, and it’s a great place to relax and soak up the local culture. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Palacio Municipal, which houses the city’s government offices.

Just across from the Plaza de Armas in the city’s historic center you will find The Immaculate Conception Cathedral – the primary Catholic church in the Diocese of Tampico. This stunning cathedral is a must-see destination for visitors interested in exploring Tampico’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re looking for a moment of spiritual reflection or simply want to admire the impressive architecture, the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is a must-visit attraction in the region.

  4. Mercado Municipal de Tampico & local cusine.
One of the things I loved the most about Tampico was its vibrant food scene. The city is known for its delicious dishes, and I had the opportunity to try some of the best during my visit. One of my favorite meals were carne asada a la tampiqueña, tortas de barda and cochinita. I also loved the aguas frescas de frutas, that are fresh fruit blended with water. Most of the dishes you can try at the local market called Mercado Municipal de Tampico. Inaugurated on February 13th, 2020, the market brings a new image and better option for family gatherings in the downtown area, taking advantage of its art nouveau architecture that characterizes the port.

Overall, my visit to Tampico was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this charming city to anyone who is interested in exploring the unique charm and culture of Mexico’s eastern regions.
