How to plan a perfect trip to Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.

If you have already been to the South of Mexico, you might have heard about
an incredible nature theme park – Xcaret Eco Park, located in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya. This eco-archaeological water park with more than 50 natural and cultural attractions is a must-see destination and you should not miss it during your trip to the Riviera Maya. It is situated 60 km south of Cancun International Airport, 6 km from Playa del Carmen and 57 km north of Tulum. It takes about an hour to drive to Xcaret from Cancun.

Why is Xcaret Park so special?

  • Xcaret is the most emblematic attraction in the Riviera Maya.
  • Located directly on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo, Xcaret Park offers a breathtaking natural environment unlike any other. The lush jungles, underground rivers, cenotes, and stunning Caribbean Sea views create an atmosphere of pure paradise. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Xcaret’s diverse flora and fauna and discover why it is considered one of the most beautiful places in Mexico.
  • Xcaret is a water park, theme, amusement, eco-archaeological and more, in one place. On the one hand, you can take part in a lot of extra activities such as snorkeling, swimming with sharks or dolphins, taking an underwater walk with a Sea Trek® helmet or swimming in underground rivers. On the other hand, you can learn a lot about Mexican culture, visit a Mayan village or even take part in a traditional spiritual ceremony called the temazcal
  • An evening show called Xcaret México Espectacular is the most famous entertainment show in Cancun and Riviera Maya. It takes you on an incredible journey through the history and culture of Mexico.
  • You can meet there jaguars, dolphins, turtles and even flamingos.
  • Xcaret offers a range of activities and attractions suitable for visitors of all ages, making it a great destination for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

Key things to know for your Xcaret trip.

How much time should I spend at the Xcaret Park?

As the Xcaret park is really huge, it is definitely worth dedicating at least one entire day to fully explore and experience all it has to offer. Despite arriving early in the morning, I found that I didn’t have enough time to see everything and participate in all the activities I had planned. To make the most out of your day, I highly recommend arriving at the park early in the morning and staying until the evening performance of “Xcaret Mexico Espectacular”. This stunning show is a must-see and brings to life the rich history of Mexico, from the Mayan civilization to the Spanish conquest and beyond, showcasing breathtaking regional dances and local festivals. Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and history of Mexico at Xcaret Park.

Opening hours

8:30 am–10:30 pm

Entrance tickets.

To save both time and money, buy your Xcaret Admission Tickets in advance.
The park is usually really full and you need to wait in a long line to get your tickets. If you buy your tickets online a few weeks before your trip, you can save up to around 10% or sometimes even 15%.

  • How much is the Xcaret Park entrance ticket?
The Xcaret Basic admission is $99.99 USD, while Xcaret Plus is $129.99 USD. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 get a 25% discount. Kids under the age of 4 get free admission. If you buy your ticket online a few in advance you can save around 10 or sometimes even 15%. Please always check the current prices and offers on the official website.
  • Xcaret Basic or Plus admission?
In my opinion it is worth paying more for the Xcaret Plus Admission, as it also includes a buffet lunch and access to the Plus facilities. During your visit, you can select your buffet at any of the five restaurants with varied specialties at the park. You will have the opportunity to sample traditional dishes and experience the flavors of Mexico first-hand. Each restaurant provides a unique atmosphere and exceptional service, making for a truly memorable dining experience. The one that we chose was called La Laguna Xcaret and it was great.
Xcaret Plus Admission also allows you to use snorkeling equipment, life jackets and inner tubes and what is really important, it provides access to lockers to securely store your belongings.

XCARET Extra activities

In addition to the attractions included in your park ticket, you can enhance your Xcaret experience by booking additional, paid activities. These can be arranged in advance online or directly at the park. We booked them online two weeks before our trip. To ensure a seamless trip, it’s important to properly plan the timing of your extra activities, especially when you travel in a group and each of you selects different attractions. Keep in mind that activities take place at different times and locations, so coordination is key to avoid wasting time waiting for others. To optimize your schedule, we recommend planning water activities early in the morning and scheduling the Temazcal, which currently takes place only in the afternoon, accordingly.

Here you will find the complete list of all extra activities available at Xcaret. If you’re visiting the park for just one day, I recommend you booking no more than 1-2 activities, as each one takes approximately one hour and is located in a different part of the 200-acre (81-hectare) park.”

Here is what we decided to try:

SEA TREK® – When I read this description, I was sure that this was something made for me: “Do you dream about going down to the underwater world, but don’t know how to swim? With Sea Trek® you can do it! Using its modern helmet, you will descend 16.4 ft and walk on the seabed while breathing like on the surface.”
