Bergamo is an Italian city located in the alpine Lombardy region northeast of Milan. It has a really beautiful older upper district, called Città Alta with typical narrow streets, surrounded by Venetian walls. Due to the well-connected international airport many tourists arrive to Bergamo and head directly to Milan or Venice without exploring the region, which is the hidden gem of Lombardy. In 2023 Bergamo and Brescia have been chosen the Italian Capitals of Culture in acknowledgment of their artistic and cultural heritage, innovation, and thoughtful development.

I am very lucky, because my Italian friends come from Bergamo region and thanks to them, I could enjoy this part of Italy like locals do. I even managed to learn some words in their dialect called Bergamasco. To my surprise, a lot of places that I am going to mention in this article are not very popular among tourists, but they are so incredible that I hope you will visit them one day.

San Pellegrino Terme (SPA resort)

Have you already tried the famous San Pellegrino water? Because of its taste and multiple health benefits it became really popular in the whole world. Even Leonardo da Vinci visited the source to sample the miraculous water. Nowadays you can order a bottle of San Pellegrino all over the world.

Did you know that San Pellegrino is bottled in a town located just 20 km from Bergamo Central Station? It can be reached by a local bus in only 40 minutes. Apart from the beverage company, San Pellegrino is also a beautiful SPA resort called San Pellegrino Terme, where you can spend a relaxing day enjoying multiple indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam baths and relaxing rooms. If you’re seeking a perfect escape to relax and rejuvenate, San Pellegrino Terme is the place to be. While you can enjoy the water year-round, I highly recommend visiting on a sunny day to fully appreciate the outdoor hot pools.

In addition to the thermal experiences, they offer wellness workshops, and I personally loved the face massage session I joined—it was amazing! For those wanting a bit more indulgence, there are paid options like massages and skin treatments that make the visit even more special. Whether you’re looking to unwind in the thermal waters or spoil yourself with a treatment, San Pellegrino Terme has something for everyone!

For an additional fee, you can also try a delicious Italian buffet brunch. I must say, the restaurant’s location is stunning, and the quality of the buffet was impressive. Overall, it made for a fantastic experience!

Apart from that, the real attraction is the building itself. The stunning hall of QC Terme San Pellegrino was once home to the historic Municipal Casino, adding an extra layer of charm to your wellness experience.

The ticket price starts from 44 euros and you can decide if you would like to spend there the whole day or just arrive in the morning or if you prefer in the evening. To check the current offers feel free to visit their website. I would recommend you to book your tickets in advance.

Lake Endine (Lago di Èndine)

This little but beautiful lake is another hidden gem of Bergamo. Located in the narrow valley between high peaks, it was classified by the authorities of Lombardy as the “area of remarkable environmental interest” and it is under protection. This is a perfect location for a sunday walk. If you feel like you can also rent a boat to explore the lake. Sometimes in winter people local people skate on the frozen Endine lake. Protected by the valley, the lake stays all the time in the shadow and this is why the ice does not melt fast.

Another thing that you should definitely do is to order a cup of coffee at the lakeside cafe and simply enjoy the breathtaking view. Do not forget to try delicious local pastries!

Restaurant Il Circolino di Città Alta

Eat like locals and support elderly and homeless people.

Located in a old monastery of Sant’Agata in the historic center of Bergamo (Città Alta), this restaurant and at the same time a social company, does not only offer great food and amazing wine selection, but it also supports for example including homeless and elderly people. Cooperativa Città Alta is also involved in many other cultural and social projects. The places is really authentic and raw medieval paintings on the walls create an amazing atmosphere.

If you want to try something regional I would recommend you to order Casoncelli alla Bergamasca that are kind of ravioli filled with meat and served with a butter and sage sauce and sautéed Italian Speck (or Pancetta). If you are not into meat, you can also ask for its veggie alternative.

Amaro and his mom create their pasta masterpieces with love, incredible talent, passion and Italian tradition. All ingredients are selected really carefully and the pasta factory is located directly in their shop. It also means that they prepare it by themselves.

Exploring the City Center

Enjoying Spanish arts at El Prado.

If you you are an art lover, you should start your day with a visit to the famous Prado Museum, one of the world’s greatest art museums. You’ll find there masterpieces by Spanish artists like Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, as well as works by other European masters.

The Prado Museum is open from 10 am to 8 pm between Monday and Saturday, making it easy to fit a visit into your itinerary. On Sundays, the museum opens at 10 am, but closes an hour earlier, at 7 pm. The museum’s schedule on most holidays is the same as it is on Sundays. The best time to visit Prado Museum is when the Museum opens at 10 AM. You can also visit the Prado Museum without crowds between 2 PM and 4 PM on weekdays.

It is also possible to see Prado for free! You just need to visit the musuem during the last two opening hours of every day. This is a great option for budget-conscious travelers who want to experience the museum without spending too much money. Please remember to arrive there early enough, because the free admissiony line can be very long and it has limited capavity. Last time it took me two hours to enter the exhibition.

Duration of Visit: Prado Museum’s collection is very vast. We recommend spending between three to four hours exploring the collections.

El Prado is located just walking distance from another must-visit place in Madrid a beautiful city park called el Retiro that I would suggest you to visit straight after leaving the musuem.

2. Having a stroll at El Retiro Parque

This is definitely one of my favourite spots in Madrid!

El Retiro Park is one of the most beloved and iconic destinations in Madrid, offering visitors a chance to escape the bustling city and immerse themselves in natural beauty. Located just a short walk from El Prado, this beautiful park boasts fountains, gardens, and even a boating lake. You can rent a boat and take a relaxing ride on the lake, or simply stroll around and take in the views. Best of all, admission is free!

Did you know that El Retiro was once the private playground of Spanish royalty? Back in the 17th century, King Philip IV turned this area into a hunting ground for the royal family. Today, it’s a favorite spot for picnics, jogging, and people-watching.

But El Retiro is more than just a park – it’s also home to some of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. Take a stroll through the park to see the stunning Crystal Palace, an iron and glass pavilion that looks like something straight out of a fairy tale.

My favourite restaurant in Madrid is called El Paraguas and is a must-visit restaurant for anyone looking to experience the best of traditional Spanish cuisine in a beautiful and sophisticated setting. It is also a great place for a date or celebration important events.

It is one of the city’s most renowned gastronomic destinations, known for its high-quality traditional Spanish cuisine and elegant atmosphere.

The restaurant’s name “Las Paraguas” means “the umbrellas” in Spanish, and it is named after the famous umbrellas that once lined the street where the restaurant is located.

If you have already been to the South of Mexico, you might have heard about
an incredible nature theme park – Xcaret Eco Park, located in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya. The park is usually really full and you need to wait in a long line to get your tickets. If you buy your tickets online a few weeks before your trip, you can save up to around 10% or sometimes even 15%.

How much is the Xcaret Park entrance ticket?
The Xcaret Basic admission is $99.99 USD, while Xcaret Plus is $129.99 USD. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 get a 25% discount. Kids under the age of 4 get free admission. If you buy your ticket online a few in advance you can save around 10 or sometimes even 15%. Please always check the current prices and offers on the official website.
Xcaret Basic or Plus admission?
In my opinion it is worth paying more for the Xcaret Plus Admission, as it also includes a buffet lunch and access to the Plus facilities. During your visit, you can select your buffet at any of the five restaurants with varied specialties at the park. You will have the opportunity to sample traditional dishes and experience the flavors of Mexico first-hand. Each restaurant provides a unique atmosphere and exceptional service, making for a truly memorable dining experience. The one that we chose was called La Laguna Xcaret and it was great.
Xcaret Plus Admission also allows you to use snorkeling equipment, life jackets and inner tubes and what is really important, it provides access to lockers to securely store your belongings.

These can be arranged in advance online or directly at the park. We booked them online two weeks before our trip. To ensure a seamless trip, it’s important to properly plan the timing of your extra activities, especially when you travel in a group and each of you selects different attractions. Keep in mind that activities take place at different times and locations, so coordination is key to avoid wasting time waiting for others. To optimize your schedule, we recommend planning water activities early in the morning and scheduling the Temazcal, which currently takes place only in the afternoon, accordingly.

Here you will find the complete list of all extra activities available at Xcaret. If you’re visiting the park for just one day, I recommend you booking no more than 1-2 activities, as each one takes approximately one hour and is located in a different part of the 200-acre (81-hectare) park.”

Bali’s Heaven’s Gate

Naked truth about the most famous and controversial instagram spot on the island.

Pura Luhur Lempuyang is a Balinese Hindu temple located in East Bali, in the region of Lempuyang, in the slope of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem. This pura or how you prefer – the temple, is famous because of the iconic gates of heaven. You may already be familiar with this location, as it is the most famous Instagram spot on the entire island, perhaps rivaling the legendary Tegalalang Rice Terrace Swing.

As the spot seems to divide travellers and it has become really controversial, today I will share with you some interesting facts about the gates of heaven and I would give you tips (including some spoilers:) on how to make the best out of your time at Pura Luhur Lempuyang. In the end I will share with you my personal opinion and I would be happy to hear yours:)

How to get to Bali’s Heaven’s Gate from Ubud?

The best way to get to Pura Luhur Lempuyang is to hire a local driver in advance. I can recommend you a great one if you are interested. Do you know we found him? He was one of the Grab drivers, who we met on the island. Because his English was really good and we had a great conversation, we just asked him if we would like to spend with us some days and be our private driver. Of course it is really important to agree to the price before! As i mentioned in my previous article, the price for the driver rental services is really good on Bali and Balinese people are the best local tour guides. They know a lot of amazing hidden spots.

What about taxi? Taking into consideration the amount of people visiting Heaven’s Gate every day, it is way better to have someone waiting for you, who can drive you back at the time when you want that. Otherwise, you might have two problems: you would need to wait a long time for your taxi driver to arrive and taxi services might become really expensive. The same with Grab.

When to arrive to Pura Luhur Lempuyang?

Currently, the temple opens at 6 am and closes at 7 pm. I would recommend you to get there as early as possible, because it might be very crowded and do not forget that you will also need to wait for your turn to take the iconic picture in the most popular spot on Bali. In my opinion, 5 o clock would not be a bad idea. It also depends if you want to see a sunrise there.

As we were staying in Ubud, in our case getting there required many hours of driving, and honestly I was really skeptical about visiting the temple just to take the picture. It was my boyfriend who really insisted on waking up at 4 o clock in the morning to get to the temple as early as possible. And you know what? For us it was definitely worth it, because I need to admit it that my best pictures from Bali were taken at Pura Luhur Lempuyang. Nevertheless, you need to know that the famous pictures with water are some kind of camera optical illusion. Still I did not regret having gone there and I would do it again.

How much is the entrance fee?

The entrance fee is 100,000 IDR. On top of that there is an additional fee for parking if you are on scooter or car the fee would be 5,000 IDR. Please remember that sarong is also required to be worn around your legs and your shoulders and you must be covered when visiting this sacred Hindu temple.

Do I need to bring my own saron to the temple?

We did not bring our sarons, as we were not aware that we had to. It was not a problem, because you can rent them there. The design is really nice and by wearing them your pictures look just fantastic.

How to take photos at the Gates of Heaven, Bali?

As I mentioned before, the water in the pictures is just the optical illusion. To get one of the famouse iconic pictures from the The Gateway to Heaven you need to queue for a couple of hours. It might take two or three hours and of course it depends on how many people are waiting in the line. The famous pictures are made by the Balinese people, who are at the gate to help you with a shot. You do not have to pay them anything. How does it work or rather what is the trick? The water is just the reflection of the sky and it is made with the mirror placed closed to your camera. This is the whole secret, but in my opinion the guys make great shots and I had no problem to wait two hours for my turn.

You might also ask what if you just need to take a picture by yourself? If you would jump really fast to the gate it might be realistic to take some pictures. Of course if you are faster than the next people waiting the line. That might be frustrating. On top of that the quality of your pictures might differ from what you can expect by the Balinese guys taking your shots.

What can I see there apart from the Heaven’s Gate?

The Pura Lempuyang is a really nice temple with an amazing view on the of Mount Lempuyang. We were lucky to be at the temple during a Hindu ceremony.

And of course the most important question that I would like to answer:

Should I visit Pura Lempuyang or skip it?

If you are a patient Instagramer (like me), who would love to take an amazing iconic picture, you should definitely vist Heaven’s Gate on Bali. On the other hand, if you are looking for a quiet, non-touristic spot and you don’t like crowded places and waiting in the line even for hours, maybe you can just read my pervious article and travel to some different destination.

What about me? I was lucky to be on Bali in May and it was not really crowded so I enjoyed my experience at Pura Lempuyang temple and I love every single picture that I took there. For me it was really worth it.

Today I will share with you some practical tips that made my trip to Bali just great, but I will also mention some tourist traps and things that you might want to avoid.

Authentic Bali adventure. Local gems recommended by locals.

Bali or the island of Gods is one of the most spiritual places on the Earth. If you have ever visited the island, you might have probably felt this incredible energy that is not easy to describe. It can be explained by so-called ley lines that meet on the island. Therefore, Bali belongs to the most magical places on our planet and it is believed to be able to heal not only our bodies, but also souls.

From the first minute on the island, I could perceive this incredible spiritual flow, but I did not fully understand it… yet. It was my intuition and internal peace that made me look for the answer within myself, among local people and finally on the Internet:)

Today I will share with you some practical tips that made my trip to Bali just great, but I will also mention some tourist traps and things that you might want to avoid.

1) Cheap airlines might not be the best option in Indonesia. Do not save your safety!

Our trip to Asia started this time in Singapore, continued in Malaysia and finally we landed in Indonesia. Bali was our last stop. One of our good friends from Singapore, who knows a lot about the local aviation industry, recommended us to fly with AirAsia. It is because the quality of planes, as we learnt, matters a lot in the region. Some airlines repurchase old planes, even after 20 or 30 years!!!! Yes, this sounds a bit scary and it is one of the reasons why sometimes we hear about plane crashes in Indonesia.

To our surprise, food on the plane was just amazing. We have ordered a national dish of Indonesia – Nasi Goreng. The dish is made of rice and some mixture of spices, which gives it a smoky flavor. The secret is the sweet, caramelized soy sauce and the shrimp paste. I would definitely recommend you trying it when you are in Indonesia. All in all, the Air Asia flight to Bali was pleasant. Some passengers were complaining though that there was no business class available, and they were just seated with non-priority passengers, but that was the biggest “problem”on the board:)

2) Rent a local car driver to explore the island

Many of you might be wondering why traveling with a local driver is better than exploring the island on your own. Here are the answers:

a) On Bali you need to drive on the left-hand sideof the road. This might be really confusing!
b) Driving on the island requires incredible driving skills. Many times I was asking myself how people manage to drive through such crowded and narrow streets, for example in the Ubud area. This is why renting a scooter was not an option for us.
c) Local drivers are the best tour guides. Not only are they very friendly and helpful, but they really do their best to make your Balinese experience unforgettable. They show you their real world, the authentic Balinese culture, a lot of local restaurants and they take you to places, where they bring their own families. Some of the spots cannot be even found in the guidebooks and are breathtaking.

As our driver was born on Bali, he shared with us a lot of interesting facts about the island, local religion (Balinese Hinduism) and beautiful customs, such as famous Balinese offerings called canang sari.

I consider myself extremely lucky because every time I travel to Mexico, I am accompanied by locals, which helps me to gain deeper understanding of this beautiful and complex culture. In November 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting the eastern part of Mexico for the first time. During my trip, I spent a couple of days in the charming city of Tampico. Every Mexican region is unique, with its own charm, traditions, and culture and Tampico is no exception.

BASIC FACTS

Tampico is a bustling port city located in the southeastern part of Tamaulipas, Mexico, with a population of around 315,000 people. This city is renowned for its vast oil and gas reserves, making it one of the most important oil fields in Mexico. In addition to its industrial riches, Tampico boasts stunning natural beauty, including the picturesque Playa Miramar beach, as well as exotic flora and fauna that draw visitors from all over the world. However, Tampico is not just a city of earthly riches and beauty. Some people claim to have seen extraterrestrial sightings in the area, adding an air of mystery and intrigue to the region. Located in a near-by city of Madero, the Miramar beach is the most important attraction of the entire state, and it is believed to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole Gulf of Mexico. You cannot miss this place! Without any doubt this is my personal number one. When visiting the lagoon, it is important to take note of the security signs and avoid swimming in the water. Despite the impressive sight of the crocodiles, they are not friendly creatures and can pose a serious danger to visitors who attempt to enter the water. One of the things I loved the most about Tampico was its vibrant food scene. The city is known for its delicious dishes, and I had the opportunity to try some of the best during my visit. One of my favorite meals were carne asada a la tampiqueña, tortas de barda and cochinita. I also loved the aguas frescas de frutas, that are fresh fruit blended with water. Most of the dishes you can try at the local market called Mercado Municipal de Tampico. Inaugurated on February 13th, 2020, the market brings a new image and better option for family gatherings in the downtown area, taking advantage of its art nouveau architecture that characterizes the port.

Overall, my visit to Tampico was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this charming city to anyone who is interested in exploring the unique charm and culture of Mexico’s eastern regions. Why should I go to the Yucatán Peninsula?

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a stunning destination that offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, relaxing on pristine beaches, or immersing yourself in vibrant culture, the Yucatan Peninsula has it all.

Best time to visit Yucatan?

The “dry” and at the same time the peak season for Yucatan travel spans from November to April. I was in the region twice and I always stayed there in December. To my suprise the season was not as dry as I thought. In the third week of December the weather was really great, but after just a couple of days it started to rain a lot and it was even cold. During the peak season, the accommodation prices are really high, and you’ll have to pay extra for flights and hotel reservations.

I would not recommend you to visit the region between May and July because it can get really hot. Remember that this part of Mexico is located in the tropical zone.

Yucatan experiences hurricane season from June to November, with a greater chance of storms occurring from August to October. However, they are infrequent. In the last 30 years, the area has encountered only two hurricanes. This is why alternatively you can also think about visiting Yucatan for example in September. It is the beginning of the fall season, with very warm sea temperatures and way better prices.

How to get to Yucatan?

From my experience, either if you are coming from abroad or are already in Mexico, the most efficient and the safest way of transportation are planes. The country is really huge, and it takes over 6 hours to fly from the north to the south. This is why
I would not recommend you to travel by car.

Mexico has dozens of international and domestic airports. Among the airports in the Yucatán region are Cancún (CUN), Cozumel (CZM), and Mérida (MID)

Most of the tourists fly directly to the Cancun International Airport – the second biggest airport in the country.

Where to stay in Yucatan? Cancun or Playa del Carmen?

For those planning a trip to Mexico, one question often arises: where should I stay? While Cancun and Playa del Carmen are popular choices among tourists, each offers a distinct experience.

Cancun is perfect for those who enjoy big all-inclusive hotels with a party atmosphere. Its location close to the airport also makes it a convenient choice for some visitors.

On the other hand, Playa del Carmen offers a more traditional, laid-back vibe with a small-town feel. It’s less commercialized than Cancun and has a range of local restaurants, shops, and beautiful beaches. This town is perfect for travelers looking to experience local culture and customs while still having access to modern amenities.

Personally, I prefer staying in Playa del Carmen because of its authentic charm and easy access to the rest of the region. With plenty of options for exploration and relaxation, it’s a great base for your Yucatan Peninsula adventure.

What to see in Yucatan?

Chichen Itza, Yucatán, Mexico – the New World Wonder

For travelers venturing to the southern region of Mexico, Chichen-Itza is an absolute must-visit destination. This exceptional Mayan center, located in the Yucatan peninsula, has been shaped by diverse cultures throughout its 1,000-year lifespan. Its breathtaking stone monuments and artistic works offer a glimpse into the visionary Maya and Toltec perception of the world and the universe. The city’s fusion of Mayan construction techniques with central Mexican elements serves as a testament to the Mayan-Toltec civilization. With a history shrouded in mystery, the Mayan culture depicted in movies such as “2012”, “Apocalypto” and “Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of Crystal Skull” continues to captivate people.

Chichen Itza is accessible by a three-hour drive from Playa del Carmen, either by car or bus. Alternatively, you may opt to book an organized tour through a local travel agency, but it’s crucial to select a reputable company. Prior to booking, it’s recommended to review the latest feedback on Google as we failed to do so on our trip, resulting in a disastrous experience.

Try to get to Chichen Itza as early as possible, because it can get really crowded and hot. Chichen Itza opens every day from Monday to Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. The last entrance is at 4 pm and its daily limit is 3,000 visitors per day.

Tulum

The Yucatan Peninsula is steeped in ancient Mayan history, and you can explore the remnants of this fascinating civilization at dozens of archeological sites throughout the region. Another place that you should not miss are Mayan ruins in Tulum, famous for cliffside views of the Caribbean Sea. Tulum is the 3rd most visited Archeological Site in México after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza with more than 2 million visits per year. The ruins can be found on the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula within the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located only 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen. In my opinion this is one of the most breathtaking places in the world.

The location of the Tulum Ruins is arguably its biggest drawcard. Positioned on a bluff that faces the rising sun, this Maya ruin is the only settlement located on the Caribbean’s sandy beaches. Visitors continue to be captivated by the stunning views, making it a must-visit destination in the Riviera Maya.

To enter the Tulum Ruins, the access fee is approximately $35-40 pesos, with an additional fee of $30 pesos for video cameras. The site is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm and includes a tour guide service within the price. Alternatively, if you prefer to skip the lengthy queues, priority tickets can be purchased for expedited entry.

Cenotes Azul & Cristalino

Have you ever heard about cenotes? They are “natural sinkholes filled with freshwater that have opened up below the earth’s surface”. Can you imagine swimming in the underground cave?

For the Mayan civilization, cenotes were the sole source of water in the jungle and held immense cultural and spiritual significance. The Mayan believed that cenotes were portals to their “underworld” or “Xibalba,” where their deities dwelled, and their spirits linger after death, making them sacred sites to the Mayan people.

The Yucatan region boasts numerous unique cenotes for visitors to explore. For those with ample time, the famous Route of Cenotes offers a chance to discover a variety of these natural wonders.

This was an incredibly cool experience and definitely a must-do!

Xcaret Park

If you have already been to the South of Mexico, you might have heard about an incredible nature theme park – Xcaret Eco Park, located in Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya. This eco-archaeological water park with more than 50 natural and cultural attractions is a must see destination and you should not miss it during your trip to the Riviera Maya. It is situated 60 km south of Cancun International Airport, 6 km from Playa del Carmen and 57 km north of Tulum. It takes about an hour to drive to Xcaret from Cancun.

What to eat in Yucatan?

The unique cuisine of the Yucatan state blends a variety of ingredients from both Mayan and European culinary traditions. Mayan staples like corn, chocolate, wild turkey, squash, chiles, and tomatoes are combined with Spanish pork, oranges, and Dutch Edam cheese to create distinctive regional dishes. The most famous dish of the Mayan origin is cochinita Pibil. Cochinita pibil is a dish made by marinating suckling pig in citrus juice, garlic, and achiote paste with an orange hue. The marinated meat is then wrapped in banana leaves and roasted using a traditional Mayan cooking method. Something that I still miss after coming back home are Marisquitas – a typical crepes style dessert that cannot be found anywhere else in Mexico.

If you are staying at Playa del Carmen, I would recommend you getting a table at the famous restaurant La Cueva del Chango. We went there for breakfast, but the place also offers lunch and it is really popular among locals. I really loved their fresh juices and my traditional mole with chicken. Chilaquiles were also amazing. Maybe in the future I will write a separate article about Mexican cuisine.

As I planned my trip to Egypt, an exhilarating thought consumed my mind: fulfilling my Indiana Jones dreams by entering a real pyramid. Little did I know that my journey would lead me to the oldest pyramid in the world, located in the heart of Djoser, Saqqara, only 23 km away from the iconic Giza Plateau. During my trip I also discovered that there were even more pyramids awaiting exploration in the neighboring Dahshur.

If you’re also dreaming of exploring the majestic Egyptian pyramids, look no further. In this article, I’ll be your guide to planning an extraordinary pyramid experience. Not only will I provide you with valuable travel tips, but I’ll also share insider knowledge to ensure you make the most of your journey through these timeless marvels.

Best time to travel to Egypt.

To truly appreciate the magnificence of the pyramids, consider visiting them during a milder season, typically from October to April, to avoid the scorching heat. Additionally, aim to arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds.

What to take with you:

Be sure to pack enough water to stay hydrated throughout your desert exploration. The scorching sun can be relentless, so don’t forget to bring a sunhat to shield yourself from its intense rays.

Also applying a high SPF sunscreen, preferably 50 SPF, is essential to protect your skin from sunburns.

Keep in mind that in some cases to get the entrance ticket to the pyramids you will be only able to pay in cash. Therefore it is really advisable to always have cash with. Please remember that you would also need to pay in cash for the access to the toilet.

How to optimize your time?

Start your day early to maximize your time at the pyramids. I highly recommend waking up early and renting a car. However, please take into consideration that driving in Egypt can be challenging and this is why we decided to hire a local driver and an English-speaking local tour guide.

Why hire a local guide to explore Pyramids?

It helps you to save a lot of time, because you don’t have to constantly look for a taxi or the next uber.
They share with you insider tips.
Egyptian drivers usually speak the local language, so you might have communication problems, so your guide doubles as your translator.
You can learn a lot about Egyptian culture from them.
They usually help you to negotiate the prices.
They know the best photo spots in Egypt.
Unlike organized tours that may have mandatory stops at certain shops or locations, with a personal guide, you can adjust your itinerary to your preferences. This allows you in most cases to fully concentrate on the sights and experiences that interest you the most.
You support local economy.

What about Uber and taxi services?

You may be wondering whether Uber operates in Egypt. Indeed, Uber is available, but I would advise against relying on Uber or taxi services for this particular itinerary.

If your itinerary includes only visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza, Uber can be a suitable transportation option. However, if you plan to explore other locations beyond Giza, such as Saqqara or Dahshur, it is still advisable to consider alternative means of transportation, the challenges of navigating through the desert and the limited availability of Uber in remote areas. It’s best to avoid the risk of being stranded in the middle of nowhere, waiting for the next car to arrive (if it arrives at all).

One-Day Pyramid Itinerary

GIZA

8:00 AM – Start your day at the Giza Plateau, home to the world-famous pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. Giza Pyramids are located only 15 km from Cairo and they open at 8:00 AM. Try to get there before 8:00, because you will have to queue to get the tickets. We arrived in Giza at 7:50 AM.

Summer (April – September): 8 AM – 5 PM

Winter (October – March): 8 AM – 4 PM

Last admission: one hour before closing time, i.e. 4 PM in summer and 3 PM in winter.

Tickets price:

The entrance fee for visiting the Pyramids of Giza depends on your nationality. Egyptian citizens and nationals of other Arab countries can enjoy free entry. However, visitors from other countries are required to pay an entrance fee of 240 Egyptian pounds. If you would like to enter the Great Pyramid of Giza it will cost you extra 440 EGP. I was considering going inside the Great Pyramid, but our schedule was really tight, so I decided to skip it this time. My main goal was the oldest Pyramid in Saqqara and the famous Red Pyramid in Dahshur. Make sure to check the latest prices, as they can change frequently.

The Great Sphinx of Giza

Don’t forget to capture the iconic photo with the Sphinx as your backdrop, a true symbol of Egypt’s ancient civilization. To save time, ask your driver to bring you near to the Sphinx, as it might be very hot and the Great Sphinx of Giza is located 532 meters from the Great Giza Pyramid. Access to the Sphinx is included in the general admission ticket for the Giza Pyramids (as of May 2023).

Camel ride

Another popular activity at the Giza Pyramids is camel riding. However, it’s important to be cautious of unscrupulous camel jockeys, who will do their best to maximize their profits. You might be wondering now what the fair price for a camel ride might be. The answer is – it depends if you are Egyptian or if you are willing to negotiate the price, what is encouraged here. It was our tour guide, who helped us to find the reliable service. However, we did not escape from paying a tourist price. A 15 minute ride cost us 500 Egyptian pounds, which according to our local friend was pretty high. Please mind that prices are rapidly changing due to inflation, so it would be advisable to double-check them with locals.

How much time do you need at Giza Complex?

I recommend you to spend 2 to 3 hours at the Giza Pyramids complex. This should give you enough time to explore the pyramids, take a camel ride and take a selfie with the Sphinx.

Why should you visit Giza?

The Giza Pyramids are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Giza Pyramids are over 4,500 years old, dating back to the Old Kingdom of ancient Egypt. They served as royal tombs for pharaohs, highlighting the importance of these rulers and their beliefs in the afterlife.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of the three and was the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years.
The Giza complex is also home to the Great Sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human.

When visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza, it’s important to manage expectations regarding access to its inner chambers. While the recent discovery of a hidden corridor generated excitement, most parts of the pyramid’s interior remain off-limits to tourists.

However, visitors can still explore notable areas such as the King’s and the Queen’s Chambers, and the Grand Gallery. The King’s Chamber is the believed burial place of Pharaoh Khufu. Inside, you’ll find the monarch’s sarcophagus, a remarkable structure carved out of a single block of granite. SAQQARA & the Step Pyramid of Djoser

10:00 – 11:00 AM – Continue your journey to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser awaits you. It should take approximately 1 hour depending on traffic to get from Giza to Saqqara. To explore the Step Pyramid of Djoser and see the whole complex in Saqqara you will need around 2 hours. In 2020 it reopens to the public after 14-year restoration.

Step back in time as you explore the world’s oldest pyramid and admire its impressive, stepped structure. Wander through the surrounding complex, discovering ancient tombs, mastabas, and intricately decorated walls that offer glimpses into Egypt’s rich history.

In my opinion you should plan for Saqqara maximum 2 hours (including the Djoser Pyramid entrance).

Why should you visit Saqqara?

Let me share with you some interesting facts about Saqqara that I have learnt from a local Egyptologist and I have read in Egyptian literature.

Saqqara is one the most important and richest necropolis in Egypt and it is huge (22 km from north to south and about 7 km from east to west), where the largest and most beautiful tombs of the Old Kingdom were built.
The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the oldest surviving pyramid in the world and it was built around 4,700 years ago. It represents a significant architectural advancement, marking the transition from mastaba tombs to pyramid structures. It was a milestone in world architecture, as limestone was first used on a large scale as construction material and for the first time the royal tomb had the shape of a pyramid. It was built for Djoser – the first king of the Third Egyptian Dynasty (the first golden age in the history of Egypt).
The Step Pyramid is unique in its design, featuring six distinct, stacked levels or steps, giving it a stepped appearance. Originally standing at around 6 tiers, it reached a height of approximately 62 meters (203 feet).
The pyramid was designed by a Pharaoh’s son – Imhotep, the vizier of Djoser, who is considered to be a genius. He was an architect, a magician, a philosopher and a doctor. Greeks identified him as Asclepius, the god of healing. He is also considered to be the author of the lost Book of Knowledge. It is believed that Imhotep learnt in Memphis how to carve the stones. He first became a sculptor and architect. The bronze statue found at Djoser complex suggests that he also became a “chief minister”.
Saqqara is not as touristic as Giza and the experience is different.
It is a must for all history enthusiasts.

Inside the Step Pyramid.

The entrance to the pyramid is located on the northern side, and visitors can access it through a narrow passageway that leads into the subterranean gallery and other chambers within the pyramid. The staircase is the main access point to explore the interior of the pyramid. However, please note that the specific number of steps may vary slightly depending on the condition of the staircase and any restoration work that has been carried out.

Following the corridor, you will be led to a viewpoint overlooking the burial well with the sarcophagus.

Please remember that it might get pretty hot inside the pyramid. Furthermore, if you have claustrophobia or any health-related concerns, going through the tight spaces within the pyramid may be challenging. However, I believe that going inside the Pyramid of Djoser is way easier than entering the Red Pyramid in Dahshur, which I will talk about below.

Dahshur – Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid

Depart from Saqqara around 1:00 or 2:00 PM and make your way to Dahshur, which should take around 30 minutes to 1 hour. Plan for approximately 2 hours to visit both the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid in Dahshur.

The Red Pyramid

The Red Pyramid, also known as the North Pyramid, is one of the most prominent pyramids in the Dahshur necropolis area, located near Cairo, Egypt. Its name derives from the reddish hue of the limestone blocks used in its construction.

It’s worth mentioning that if you’re considering entering the Red Pyramid, it’s advisable to be in good physical condition. To get to the entrance you need to walk up for a couple of minutes. The journey inside involves descending a long and steep tunnel, which can be quite challenging. The passageway is narrow, and you may need to crouch or walk in a bent position as you make your way down. If you have claustrophobia or any physical limitations I would advise you against entering the Red Pyramid.

Once you get inside, after passing the tunnel you will need to climb up the wooden stairs, which provide you with the access to further chambers within the pyramid. The Red Pyramid offers an extraordinary experience, but it’s crucial to be aware of the physical demands and spatial constraints involved. If you’re fit and prepared for the unique challenges it presents, exploring the Red Pyramid can be a rewarding and memorable adventure.

The Bent Pyramid

The Bent Pyramid is an intriguing pyramid located in the Dahshur necropolis.
It is called the “Bent Pyramid” due to its unusual shape, characterized by a change in inclination partway up the structure. Here’s the story behind the Bent Pyramid:

This is one of the pyramids built by King Sneferu, the father of the pharaoh Khufu (the same famous pharaoh buried at the Great Pyramid of Giza). It was called “bent” because of its broken lines due to a change of angle, an engineering issue in its design. The king’s architects had to come up really fast with a new idea and at short notice they built the Red Pyramid. Archaeologists now believe that the Bent Pyramid represents a transitional form between step-sided and smooth-sided pyramids.

To get to the Bent Pyramid I had to take the stairs leading to the second entrance located high on the west face of the pyramid. It was pretty challenging because of the high temperature and the distance, but when I finally arrived at the top the view of the desert was really breathtaking.
